About Mezuzah

The Mitzvah of Mezuzah:

The commandment to put up Mezuzos is Mitzvah number 423. The Mitzvah is incumbent on Jewish men, women, and children, to have Kosher Mezuzos on their doors. One should pay special attention to his Mezuzos, as they act as an alarm system for the home, and the reward for putting up Mezuzos is long life.

What should I look for in Purchasing a Mezuzah?

There are 713 letters in a kosher Mezuzah. If there is one extra or one is missing it renders the Mezuzah invalid. The standard sizes are 7 or 10 cm. Preferably the letters should not exceed the margins.

Where do I put Mezuzos?

Each doorway in the home needs a Mezuzah, except for the bathroom doorway. Office doorways, garages, and attics also need Mezuzos. Ask your local Rabbi to clarify exactly which locations need a Mezuzah. The Mezuzah is generally placed on the right doorpost.

How often do I need to check my Mezuzos?
Mezuzos need to be checked twice every 7 years. Have them checked by a certified Sofer. Computer scanning can be done to examine for missing letters or words. This examination is inexpensive, and it only needs to be performed once. Computer scanning is not counted as being checked, as the computer only looks for spelling mistakes. Only a Sofer is qualified to notice cracked, peeling, or touching letters.
